Volvo is all set to launch its luxury compact SUV – Volvo XC60 in India. The 2011 Volvo V60 is equiped with a new 1.6-litre GTDi engine, which is available in two versions: 1.6 GTDi (T3) with 150 horsepower and T4 with 180 horsepower. Volvo Trucks Initiates Field Testing of Liquid Gas

Today, Volvo Trucks will initiate public field testing with methane diesel trucks that can run on liquefied methane gas. At the same time, Sweden's first filling station for liquefied methane gas will open at Stigs Center in Goteborg.

This is a revolutionary step in the development of gas use in heavy vehicles, since trucks running on liquid gas combined with methane diesel technology has up to four times longer driving range compared to most traditional gas trucks.

Three Volvo FM trucks with 13-litre engines are currently being field tested. The technology is based on Volvo's proven Euro 5 diesel engine, which has been converted for gas operation.

The field test trucks are equipped with special tanks for liquefied methane gas. Liquid gas is the optimum fuel for methane diesel technology. When liquid methane and diesel are used in a ratio of 75--25, a truck performing long haul or intercity duties has an operating range 500 to 1000 km, depending on driving conditions. This is twice the operating range of methane diesel vehicles running on compressed gas and four times that of gas trucks with Otto engines.

The field test vehicles are being operated by transport companies DHL, Gotene Kyltransporter and Renova. The start of the field tests coincides with the inauguration of Sweden's first public filling station for liquefied methane gas at Stigs Center in Goteborg. The station is a collaborative project between Volvo Trucks, Fordonsgas Sverige and Goteborg Energi.

Filling stations have previously only existed for CNG (compressed natural gas). If methane gas is cooled down to minus 160 deg C instead of being compressed, it becomes liquid and its volume is reduced by half. In this case, it is called LNG (liquefied natural gas), or LBG (liquefied biogas) if it is a biogas. Both these gases are also called LMG (liquefied methane gas).

Twin Scroll Technology uses a more compact and simple turbocharger with quick response, giving equivalent performance to dual turbochargers.

The 2011 S60 can brake on its own if there is someone or something in the road. A spokesperson says it should cut down on the number of children killed each year in parking lots and school zones.

The new feature is called pedestrian detection. It is part of a $2100 safety upgrade package only available on the S60 model.

“Hopefully this is architecture that will be spread across the industry as time goes on,” said Volvo representative Angelo Angotti.

The technology works through a radar sensor in the grill and a camera beneath the rear view mirror. If the car is going 22 miles an hour or less, and there is an object in the road, the car won’t wait for the driver to react. It will come to a full stop.

Pedestrian detection does not work in reverse or at high speeds. The new S60 hits showrooms in September at a base price of about $37,000.

Revealed ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut, the all-new Volvo V60 is the estate version of the recently launched 2011 S60 sedan. Aimed almost squarely at European buyers as Volvo projects that "no less than 90 percent" of the annual V60 production of 50,000 cars will find a home in Europe, the sporty-looking estate model will go on sale this fall.Volvo describes the low slung V60 as a sports wagon with a coupe-like roofline. "The typical sports wagon customer is an S60 buyer who would like some extra space and flexibility, but without the slightest compromise on sporty design and exciting driving properties," says Volvo Cars President and CEO Stephen Odell.

However, Volvo's focus on looks come with a cost as the V60's boot space is a mere 430 liters with the rear seats up. That's compared to 460lt of the BMW 3-Series Touring, 485lt of the Mercedes C-Class Estate and 490lt of the Audi A4 Avant. The car will come equipped with a 40/20/40-split rear seat and the fold-flat front passenger seat.Volvo has no problem admitting that the V60 isn't going to satisfy traditional estate buyers."From the design viewpoint the focus was on making the car as close to a coupe as possible, while retaining that handy extra space at the rear," say Örjan Sterner, head of exterior design for the new Volvo V60. "Our sports wagon does not aim to compete with the traditional estate car. For the customer who wants a lot of load space, there is our V70 or XC70."

Being a "sports wagon", Volvo claims the V60's handling and dynamics match those of the S60. The estate model will be offered with a choice of two chassis set ups, the standard in Europe dynamic chassis and the touring chassis. The difference between the two chassis concerns the dampers and the front and rear subframes, with the touring variant featuring a somewhat softer setting.In addition to the two standard chassis, all variants of the V60 can be specified with the optional FOUR-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) active chassis, while there are also AWD versions of the V60.The V60's engine lineup mirrors that in the S60 sedan and includes a variety of petrol and diesel units. There are five gasoline units, spanning from the 150HP 1.6-liter turbo to the flagship 304HP 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six that propels the V60 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 6.6 seconds while returning a combined fuel consumption of 10.2lt/100km (23mpg US or 27.7mpg UK).

The diesel lineup includes three engines, a 1.6-liter with 115HP, a 2.0-liter with 163HP and a 2.4-liter with 205-horsepower.The new V60 will come equipped with a raft of safety features such as Advanced Stability Control, a new Corner Traction Control, which is a further refinement of the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) system and Pedestrian Detection system

Paydirt. That's what Volvo Car Corporation has hit with the highly anticipated new three-door C30. Just a few weeks after the car's unveiling at the 2006 Paris Motor Show,Volvo Cars, in conjunction with three aftermarket tuning companies, unleashed the ultimate expressions of free will at the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nevada.


The three cars, all modified iterations of the production Volvo C30, are the separate visions of Evolve Cars, Heico Sportiv and Burton Snowboards, and ipd, and represent what could be the ultimate dream cars for the growing number of C30 enthusiasts in the U.S. and around the world.


Built purely as design concepts and prototypes, each tuner took a decidedly different take on what the ultimate Volvo C30 could be. Volvo supplied each company a production C30 T5 with a six speed manual transmission and gave them only one rule to follow: all Volvo safety features must remain functional. Other than that, they were free to let their imaginations run wild.

Evolve C30
The Evolve C30 is the ultimate street performer and track star with motorsports technology throughout. Horsepower is the name of the game here, with 507 stampeding ponies thundering through all four massive tires. But the icing on the cake is the fully functioning gull-wing style doors.



The very first Volvo car left the factory on April 14, 1927. It was called the V4 because the letters V are Swedish for “Open Carâ€‌ and 4 denoted the number of cylinders powering the new Swedish car.




On February 20, 2008, it is once again an open car that is under the spotlights. That’s when car number 15,000,000, an attractive convertible Volvo C70, will leave the factory in Uddevalla.


In the first year, production proceeded at a modest pace, with 297 cars being sold in 1927. Emerging from the shadow of the global economic depression and Second World War, it took Volvo 23 years to build its first 100,000 cars. Today, that figure corresponds to about three months of production.


However, Volvo has never really been a high-volume manufacturer. Early in the company’s history, it was decided that the brand name should signify quality and safety. Since the early 1970s, environmental issues too have come to the forefront of the company’s corporate agenda. It is therefore no accident that Volvo was first off the mark with the world’s single most important safety invention (the 3-point safety belt was fitted as standard to Volvo cars as far back as 1959) and with one of the world’s foremost innovations in the environmental sphere (the 3-way catalytic converter with Lambdasond was introduced in 1976).


Many Volvo owners have over the years also expressed their appreciation of their cars’ sensible, solid engineering. Functionality has always been important and this was confirmed when British motoring magazine AutoExpress undertook an ambitious survey about ten years ago to find out which cars are best and worst to live with from the owner’s viewpoint. Two Volvo models took part in the survey, and both won their classes. The Volvo C70 was regarded as the best sports car and the Volvo S80 was named the best luxury car in stiff competition against considerably more expensive cars.


Today the Volvo brand is equally renowned for the attractive design of cars that reflect characteristic Scandinavian design traditions.


When that first car drove past the factory gates back in 1927, it proudly carried its “iron symbolâ€‌ on the radiator grille. That mark was and still is a symbol of Swedish steel and quality. When car number 15,000,000 now leaves the factory in Uddevalla, that symbol is still carried with pride on the front and it still represents quality and solidity. The Volvo C70 is one of the absolute safest convertibles ever built. It is a functional and spacious car. And it is actually two cars in one as the three-piece retractable hardtop transforms the Volvo C70 from coupe to convertible at the touch of a button.

Volvo Cars has just released the Volvo XC90 V8 Sport in the US market, responding to customer requests for a sportier Volvo XC90. Going head to head with the likes of the BMW X5 4.4i (or the upcoming 4.8si), the Volvo XC90 V8 Sport has a 311hp V8 engine, and comes in two unique colour options – Passion Red and Electric Silver.


The chassis has had some enhancements to improve it’s driveability – stiffer antiroll bars and shock absorbers, quicker steering response, and the Nivomat self-levelling system is installed standard. On the exterior, you have twin chromed exhaust pipes and large 19 inch alloy sport wheels. The wheel arches come with color-matched extenders, which puts emphasis on the presence of the huge wheels. Chrome details such as the roof rails have been replaced with a matte silver finish, and the skid plate is lower.


As for the interior, you have sports seats and a sport steering wheel as well as gear shift done up in perforated leather. Instrument dials light up with a shimmering blue luster.

Volvo S60 Crashes During Safety Demonstration

The brand Volvo is synonymous with safety. After all, that's why most people buy into the brand.

Still, spanners get thrown into the works sometimes. And things don't work when they should as Volvo recently found out.



According to a Wired.com report and video, Volvo held a media demonstration of their new collision system warning in Sweden.

A new Volvo S60 was "fired out of Volvo's testing tunnel at around 30mph (48kmh)," the Wired report said.

The new collision warning system then kicked in, bringing the car to a stop before a truck parked in its path.

That was what should have happened.

Instead, the car smashed into the back of the truck right in front of global media.

Volvo said there was a human error in the preparation of the crash, the report stated.

Said the report: "Volvo later claimed...that had a human been driving, he or she would have noticed the system was not operating correctly. The technical reason for the fail concerned a problem with the car's battery."

To be fair, the report added, the collision warning system was seen working perfectly in the day.

Fresh off of the release of the all new Volvo C30 hatchback, the safety conscious Swedish automaker is also planning on producing an electric vehicle version of the new car. The electric Volvo will be known as the C30 Battery Electric Vehicle and will be powered exclusively by batteries feeding electric motors which will result in absolutely zero emissions and give the Volvo C30 BEV a range of up to 150 kilometers.

Volvo has already built a handful of the BEVs in order to conduct internal testing with the electric vehicles and advance their development of a plug in hybrid Volvo that is set to debut sometime in 2012. The Volvo C30 BEV is currently powered by a highly efficient Lithium-ion battery that can be recharged through a regular A/C power outlet, and after eight hours of storing juice is ready to trel up to 150 kilometers, perfect for the everyday commute to work or even a quiet and carefree Sunday drive. The C30 BEV is limited to 130 km/h and sprints from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 11 seconds.

Volvo feels that electricity is the fuel of the future and that zero emissions highways are what the next generation of new car buyers will be looking for. By combining an environmentally friendly power train with a stylish hatchback body, the Swedish automaker feels that the 2010 Volvo C30 BEV is the car of the future.

Volvo S60 In Belgian Touring Car Series

Volvo been a involved in cars racing for a long time, models like Volvo 850 competing successfully in BTCC. Now, the Swedish automaker will return in a touring car championship, but not the the British one (BTCC), but the Belgian BTCS.

The chosen model will be the new Volvo S60, the latest model released. The circuit torpedo will share only a few things with the series model, having a 3.5-liter V6 engine, centrally located, which develops 416 HP and 296 lb-ft of torque. The power will be supplied to the rear axle via a sequential transmission with six gears

The chassis on which Volvo s60 BTCS is built on is a tubular one, and the adjustable suspension is specially designed for track, as well the braking system. The body, is about the only element which is related to the stock model, and its look is highlighted by the new aerodynamic kit called Silhouette S1.

The Swedes chose Belgium to compete with the Volvo S60 model, because the series version is also built at their plant in Ghent, and thus will have the support of the local public.

Volvo C30 BEV Only for Europe Market

Volvo has confirmed that Volvo C30 BEV model will only be sold in Europe, to a big disappointment for American Volvo fans.

However, production on the electric C30 isn’t slated for until 2012, and in the meantime, Volvo will build 50 test vehicles to be driven around Sweden over the next two years.

Volvo Launch S80 in India

Volvo Auto India, the automobile manufacturer giant has decided to launch the upgraded version of its premium luxury sedan S80, in the Indian market.

The new upgraded Volvo S80 incorporates a D5 Twin-Turbo diesel engine, which is believed to deliver a high performance at low fuel consumption. Additionally, it sports many advanced technical features including Twin Turbo and Peizo high-pressure technology.

The engine is capable to generate a power of 205 horsepower and a torque of 420 Nm. The car gives a mileage of 13.1 kmpl while emits Carbon dioxide at relatively low rate of 203gms/km. The engine's diesel particulate filter effectively controls the soot particles in the exhaust gasses and its unique emission control system helps in controlling nitrogen oxide level.

Moreover, significant changes have been made to beautify the interior of the car. Its interior is furnished with the clean surfaces, harmonious lines with extremely comfortable seats. It's distinctive Volvo IAQS (Interior Air Quality System) helps in checking the amount of particles, pollen, gases and certain unpleasant odours to enter the passenger area.

The chrome detailing work on the lower part of the door mouldings, exhaust, under the tail lamps and on the air intakes adds more dynamism to the look of the car.

Volvo Launches New Turbo Gassoline Engine

FoMoCo's soon-to-be-sold to China's Geely Motors Volvo brand is expanding its range of gasoline engines with the presentation of the all-new 2.0-liter GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) that will initially find its way under the hood of the S80 sedan, V70 estate and XC60 compact SUV models.

Even though Volvo did not mention anything about Ford, we suspect that the new four-cylinder unit that combines turbocharging technology and direct injection with twin variable camshafts, is either the same engine or heavily based on FoMoCo's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that will be used on several cars including the European Mondeo and the Australian Falcon.

Volvo said that the new 2.0 GTDi petrol engine produces an output of 203 horsepower and 300 Nm or 221.3 lb-ft of peak torque that is sustained from 1750 rpm all the way up to 4,000 rpm.

The engine will be offered in combination with Volvo's automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.

With this new engine and the six-speed manual gearbox, the S80 sedan accelerates from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 7.9 seconds while returning a combined fuel consumption of 7.9 lt /100km which is equal to 29.8mpg US and 35.8mpg UK.

Volvo said that the new 2.0 GTDi engine is being initially launched on markets that offer tax incentives for engines below two liters in displacement including South-East Asia, the Netherlands, China and Japan, adding that more countries/regions will follow later in the year.
